Chapter Seven

It was late. I should have been asleep. Instead, I was in bed, tossing and turning with a restless wolf rolling around in my chest. She wanted to be let free to roam the miles of ranch land that surrounded the big house, but I was holding tight to my skin in an attempt to avoid another midnight mourning session. The awkwardness I’d had to swallow down and smile through when sitting next to Adrian at breakfast after spending the night with my wolf crying her heart out to the moon over him was… difficult. I couldn’t let that happen again. My mind needed something else to focus on.

Sliding to the edge of my mattress, I grabbed my phone off of the side table and quickly dialed the number. It rang until the voicemail kicked on, so I hung up and dialed again.

“’Lo?” His voice was thick with slumber, and it was clear that I had woken him up.

“Um, hey. It’s Lenny.”

There was the sound of rustling sheets, and he cleared his throat, voice now hardened. “Lenny? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

The sudden switch in his demeanor made me dizzy, and I could barely articulate my words well enough to explain. “Huh? Wha—I mean, yes, I’m fine. Goodness, Cassius, why would you assume something is wrong? Take a deep breath.”

Nibbling on my bottom lip nervously, I listened as he blew out a harsh breath.

“You do know that these are booty-call hours, right? If a woman who is not giving up the booty calls me, my first thought is that she’s in danger and needs my help.”

Okay, maybe that made a sliver of sense but still. “We’re friends, right? I’m having a hard time falling asleep, and I just need somebody to talk to. Sorry for waking you, I—I'll let you get back to sleep.”

Cassius’s loud yawn sounded across the line, followed by a grunt. “I’m up now. What’s on your mind?”

“I—” I paused. There was no way I could say that it was Adrian who was on my mind. Even if Cassius and I had agreed to keep things platonic between us, calling one man to talk about another during booty-call hours just felt wrong.

“Aww hell,” he breathed into the phone. There was more rustling and then he suddenly sounded clearer, more alert. “I’m on the way to you, and I’ll bring something to help you chill out, okay?”

“Yeah, that sounds good.”

Twenty minutes later, we sat beside each other on a bench, nestled in between two trees, in one of the many green spaces surrounding Madow. He sat, leaning against one of the trees with his eyes closed and a thin trail of smoke seeping out of his nostrils, and I sat watching him, wondering why I couldn’t just make something happen with him and toss all of the confusion with Adrian behind me.

“Are you alright?” I asked him.

One of his eyes popped open, and he glanced at me. “Yeah, why do you ask?”

“Because your beard is looking kind of dull.
